LES CONSEILS

How to avoid lingerie lines under clothing

A satin dress or a pair of fitted trousers… and suddenly, panty lines or the outline of your bra become visible beneath the fabric. For a smoother look, it all comes down to choosing the right size, materials, finishes and lingerie style. Here’s how to identify what causes visible lines and choose the most discreet solution for your outfit.

Why does a bra leave marks on the skin?

A bra can leave marks for several reasons. The first is an incorrect size: a band that is too tight can dig into the skin, while cups that are too small may create creases or cause the breasts to spill over, making them visible under clothing. Conversely, a bra that is too large may gape and create visible lines.

Fabrics and finishes also make a difference. Textured lace, thick seams or rigid edges are more likely to show under fine jersey or fluid silk. Straps that are too tight or poorly positioned underwires can also create unnecessary pressure. The bra band should sit close to the body and remain level at the front and back, without feeling too tight or too loose.

The aim, therefore, is not to systematically choose smaller or more covering lingerie, but rather lingerie that suits both your body shape and your outfit.

Solutions for an invisible look

Opt for thin or removable straps

Under a delicate top, straps are often the first thing to show. Thin, properly adjusted straps help minimise bulk, while a bra with removable or multiway straps can be adapted to low-cut, asymmetric or off-the-shoulder necklines.

Invisible straps, which are usually transparent, can also work with certain outfits. For a particularly elegant look, however, thin or removable straps remain a very discreet option. In all cases, the key is to adjust them so they provide support without digging into the skin.

Choose flat or seamless finishes

For invisible lingerie under fine fabrics, the finishing details make all the difference. Raw-cut edges, clean-cut technology and ultra-flat seams help reduce visible lines under fitted clothing. Clean cut, in particular, eliminates traditional seams to create especially smooth, discreet edges under clothing.

The same applies to briefs: invisible panties, a thong or shorts with clean-cut edges will generally be more discreet than thick or highly textured finishes.

Opt for smooth cups

Under a T-shirt, a fluid shirt or a satin dress, a seamless bra with smooth cups is often the best choice. For example, moulded or spacer cups can shape the bust while minimising visible lines under clothing.

If discretion is the priority, it is also best to avoid highly textured details and thick padding when the fabric of the garment is particularly fine. The aim is to maintain a natural, smooth silhouette without adding unnecessary volume.

Check your size regularly

Wearing the right size is essential to avoid bra creases and visible lines. The band should remain stable and horizontal, the cups should fully contain the breasts without gaping or cutting in, and the straps should feel comfortable.

Our bodies change over time, so a size you have worn for several years may no longer be the one that suits you best today. If in doubt, taking your measurements again or asking for advice in store can help you find a more precise fit and a bra that leaves fewer visible marks. Which lingerie should you choose for each type of clothing?

Not every outfit calls for the same solution. Pairing the right lingerie style with the right fabric is often the key to achieving the most natural-looking result.

Under a fitted or satin dress

Satin fabrics and close-fitting cuts can easily reveal seams and volume. Opt for an invisible bra with smooth cups and seamless or clean-cut briefs. A shade close to your skin tone will also be more discreet if the fabric is light-coloured or slightly sheer.

Under a fine or light-coloured top

Under a white T-shirt or lightweight blouse, white is not always the most invisible option: a nude shade close to your skin tone will generally blend in better beneath light-coloured fabrics. Maison Lejaby also recommends nude lingerie under light or sheer clothing for a smooth, seamless finish.

In terms of shape, choose smooth cups, flat seams and thin straps. To prevent bra lines and creases, make sure above all that the cups fit the breasts closely without gaping.

Under a backless top, bustier or low neckline

Here, the priority is to conceal the straps. A bandeau bra or a multiway bra allows you to adapt your lingerie to the cut of your outfit rather than relying on visible styling tricks.

The most important thing is to choose a shape suited to your bust that provides the support you need while respecting the lines of the garment.

Under sportswear

Close-fitting sportswear can also reveal seams. Opt for soft, breathable fabrics and flat finishes while ensuring you still have the level of support required for your activity.

Here, discretion should never come at the expense of comfort or support: the right style is first and foremost one that moves with your body without feeling restrictive.
